Deride – (v.) to talk or write about (someone or something) in a very critical or insulting way (also: to say that someone or something is ridiculous or has no value)

Example: “Usually, bigger boys deride small boys in school.”

Origin: Latin “deridēre,” from “de-“ + “ ridēre” to laugh.

First use: circa 1526
